Join Friends of CSU Libraries to take a tour of our treasures on March 14
Did you know Colorado State University Libraries is home to first editions of John Steinbeck, Sinclair Lewis, D.H. Lawrence and Wright Morris? Did you know CSU Libraries houses works written by Benjamin Franklin dating back to 1769? Or that CSU Libraries holds the records of two Colorado congressmen, more than 20 Colorado agricultural organizations, more than thirty individuals and organizations related to Colorado's waters? Or that CSU Libraries stores a complete set of the Silver Spruce, photos of Old Main, and the manuscript collections of emeritus faculty?
The Archives and Special Collections Department collects, preserves, and provides access to rare books, manuscripts, and the records of Colorado State University. A department that began unofficially in the early nineteen hundreds as college librarians identified valuable and important books and treated them with special care, the holdings now include over 10,000 rare books and hundreds of boxes, shelves, and drawers of collections of primary resource materials donated by individuals and organizations.
On Tuesday, March 14, Colorado State University Libraries will present "Treasures of Colorado State University Libraries: A Private Tour of Archives and Special Collections for Friends of CSU Libraries" at 5:30 p.m. in Room 203 of the Morgan Library. The evening will begin with presentations by Janet Bishop, Coordinator of Archives and Special Collections, and Library Technician Diana Wess.
Bishop will discuss the history of CSU Libraries' Archives and Special Collections and the important role the department plays in preserving the history of our State and University. She will share archival treasures from the Water Resources Archive, the Colorado Agricultural Archive and the University Archive Manuscript and Photographic Collections.
Wess will accompany Bishop and present on some of the rarest books in the Libraries' Special Collections. After the presentation, participants will be invited to take a tour of the Archives to examine photographs, manuscripts, and other archival material on display. These materials are among Colorado State University Libraries' most precious holdings, and this evening will provide a rare opportunity for participants to view these historic items and visit personally with CSU Libraries' archival staff.
