CSU Libraries welcomes a new digital collection to help manage Colorado’s waters

To a great extent the course of Western development followed the course of Western waters. The possession of water and the ability to use it determine who thrives and who perishes, thus the conflict over Western water is not just a fight for economic advantage - it is a fight for survival.

-Daniel C. McCool, Director of the America West Center

To help Coloradoans face the challenge of managing our precious water resources in the ensuing century, CSU Libraries is proud to welcome Colorado's Waters Digital Archive (CWDA) to its holdings.

The CWDA is a collection of digital objects documenting the history of Colorado's water resources. Current selections, digitized from the CSU Libraries' Water Resources Archive, focus on the Colorado, Platte, and Rio Grande river basins and feature studies on water resources development and water supply. These reports and accompanying maps define water concerns and issues of the past that are valuable to informing present and future water management.

The CWDA brings a new level of immediacy and searchability to these important resources. Policy makers, educators, citizens and researchers can simply log on to the digital archive at http://lib.colostate.edu/archives/cowaters/ to explore and retrieve desired materials from any Internet connection.

The CWDA is part of the Western Waters Digital Library (WWDL), a collaborative effort of the Greater Western Library Alliance. Funded by a National Leadership Grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, this digital library provides a comprehensive resource surrounding the issues of water and water management for scholars, policy makers and citizens throughout the West.

WWDL is an ongoing regional project, currently offering centralized searching of materials contributed by academic research libraries in six western states including Colorado.

The CWDA has been made possible by the efforts of CSU Libraries' faculty and staff including Dawn Bastian, Carmel Bush, Nancy Chaffin, Lynn Jickling, Tami Morse McGill, Dennis Ogg, Patty Rettig, Conni Succo, and Gregory Vogl. Subsequent additions to the CWDA will be made as time and funding allow and will relate to various aspects of water in Colorado and contributions made by Coloradoans to water activities and may include additional reports, correspondence, diaries, photographs, case files, and other materials.

For more information about the CWDA, please contact Archives and Special Collections at (970) 491-1844.
